Environmental Ministry

Green Team

The Green Team formed in 2013 out of a UCC initiative to encourage churches to demonstrate greater care for God's good creation.  This group meets quarterly to discuss ideas for how Bethlehem can continue to minimize its carbon footprint.  They also help educate the congregation about ways we can change our habits at church and at home.

Solar Array

Bethlehem is proud to have been the first house of worship in Southwestern Indiana to install solar, completing the 160-panel project in December 2016.  This commitment to clean energy is one way we demonstrate our care for God's good creation.

Watch our solar energy accumulate!  Here is a LINK to view our array’s production.

Building Upgrades

Our property and green teams regularly evaluate our energy consumption. As parts of our church have worn out and needed replacement, we've selected eco-friendly versions, such as, LED light sources, and high efficiency heating/cooling units.  Additionally, we aim to heat and cool spaces only when occupied.

Recycling

Bethlehem has a church-wide recycling program which collects paper, cardboard, and metals. Our Green Team has worked with local manufacturer Green Tree Plastics to produce benches for our property that are made from plastic collected by the congregation.  Our team has also hosts an annual community metal recycling drive, and proceeds are used to benefit other ministries of the church.
